My Peer's posts

  • In Ali Ferguson's Post I learned about all the haunted houses in New York and how she found about 30 articles on the subject. I learned about the haunted house in cherry hill because the furniture in the house is moved and thrown around. Mostly the reason that the houses were haunted was because someone was killed inside them
  • In Noelle Carter's Post I learned about Coney Island and how it all started as Sea-Lion Park. When Coney Island was at its peak, it was considered to be a place of great attraction and it appealed more to the middle class. I also learned about all the rides at the Coney Island.
  • In Jamaree's post i learned about basketball and that it was Found by James Naismith. I learned what basketballs were made out of back then and how they used real baskets to shoot the balls at.I also learned that the first games were low-scoring and slow paced rather than today's fast paced basketball game. I also learned about the first basketball gear like the shoes and other apparel

The Progress of my Project

I am doing my project on the car industry in the late 19th century and how it affected the society and the city life. Right now I am mainly focusing on how the machine was invented and where it was invented and after that I will be talking more about American Companies that started to build cars and industrialize themselves pushing the city life into a new level. Also I will be mentioning facts about how the automobile had an impact on the culture of the era.

Americans and Halloween

An average American spends about 70 dollars on his or her costume and candy and that is not including their children or their family. Even though it is not the most celebrated holiday in the year, it is still one of the biggest ones. I think that spending that much time and money on a costume that you will probably wear for one night is ridiculous and pointless but i guess with the marketing ads going around it is almost impossible to not spend money during any holiday. It is predicted that Americans will spend 2.3 billion dollars on Halloween candy this year pushing it to a new record. That is just a ridiculous number just for candy if you ask me. Overall, even though people like to spend money on pointless things, it helps out the economy since making purchases are supposed to help the American economy that is in a bad condition right now.

Answer to question 3 on industrial supremacy

The characteristics of women in the industrial workforce was that they were overwhelmingly white and mostly white. 75 percent of them were under 25 years of age and majority of them were immigrants.

What it Means to be a Nation of Immigrants

America has been called many things. A Nation of Immigrants is one of them and I think it is the best one after "The Greatest Country in the World". The reason is because so many people from different countries come to this great land to start over and feel the pursuit of happiness. I think it has shaped the country in the greatest way possible. All the immigrants bring their greatest traits to this country which shaped it to be perfect. Something very interesting about it is that no one can really say they are all american due to the fact that their ancestors were once immigrants so no matter how hard they try, there is always going to be a part of them that is still an immigrant there is no shame in that, it is our ancestors that we get our inspirations from that help us move forward.
After watching the films, I became more aware of myself and started to expect more from myself as well mostly due to the fact that I am the first from my family to move into the United States and the decisions i make will affect my off-springs. Even though this country became the best in the world I think me and other immigrants still have something to offer in order to make it even better.

Automobile Industry In the Late 19th Century

The First Benz Patent Motor Wagen.
Before automobiles were invented in the 17th century by an inventor for the Chinese emperor as a toy, people used to travel via horses and carriages pulled by animals. Since then, inventors across the globe looked for multiple ways to create a man-made vehicle that will mobilize the humans without relying on any kind of animal power. First, they tried the steam powered vehicles but after a while they realized it doesn't give the optimal speed that the scientist were shooting for. Then they went for electric powered vehicles but gave up on that as well because it wouldn't give the satisfactory speed or the lifespan. Eventually in late 1900s, scientists realized that petroleum was the way to go with the automobiles they were building. Even though it released bad gasses into the atmosphere, it was the most efficient way to get around. There were three different eras between the years 1880 and 1920; Veteran Era, Brass Era, and the Vintage Era.

1905 Curved Dash Oldsmobile

The Veteran Era started with the first mass production of automobiles in Germany by Karl Benz in 1888 who later on became the co-founder of Mercedes Benz which is a luxurious automobile maker in current day automotive market. Even though the production of automobiles started in Germany, the United States was not far from the Germans in mass producing these machines. In 1893, two brothers named Charles and Frank Duryea created the first american car company named Duryea motor Wagon Company. Even though this was the first automobile company in the U.S. Another company soon became the top automobile producer in the nation, initiated by Ransom E. Olds the Olds Motor Vehicle company was the leader in the automotive industry. By 1902 the Oldsmobile had initiated a full scale production line. With all this attraction to the automobiles, other industries like oil extraction and processing became more popular in order to supply petroleum to these vehicles. automobiles soon became icons in this era, songs were being wrote about them, they became a part of societies social life but even if all these things were a good change, there were many problems with automobiles in the Veteran Era, engines would break down, there were no roads for automobiles so tires would break constantly and petroleum was hard to gather but it did not stop the people from buying more and more cars every year which led to the Brass Era

Henry Ford's First Car. He called it the Quadracycle.

The Brass Era was named so because of all the brass that was used in the United States from 1904 to 1914 in different sectors of the industry. In this Era innovators sought out new ideas and designs for the growing automobile industry. A lot of mechanical advancements were made like the engines were put in the front of the car and only the back two tires would turn making the car what we lie to call "Rear-Wheel Drive". At the same time, many new car manufacturers stepped up to join the competition. New companies like Ford, Bugatti, and Mercer were born. Even though this Era lasted about 15 years, the best was yet to come. Only after WWI, industries could work on coming up with new ideas for cars using military technology that was revealed during the war to move the industry forward.

The very first car made for the chinese
emperor in 17th century by Ferdinand
Verbiest.

The Vintage Era started at the end of the WWI in 1919 and lasted until the Wall Street Crash in 1929. In this era cars were cleared of major problems and many new inventions have been made to make the cars more safe and efficient like the hydraulic brakes and new suspension systems to keep the cabin of the car safer. At the same time, even more car companies arose and different companies started pulling the interest of people from different social classes. Rich people would buy the 16 cylinder cars that went fast and had premium leather seats while the middle class bought the cheap 4 cylinder cars that were mass produced and had little to no luxury. Ever since then, there has been a big difference between luxury cars and middle class cars.

After the Vintage Era, the Pre-WWII Era began and then another and then another. Recently we switched Eras from being a gasoline dependent automobile industry to electrical and hybrid Era which shows how much the industry has grown and how good it responds to the needs of the consumers and adapts to the global problems. The automotive industry has definitely played a huge role in society and helped mobilize our society today.

Faces of America

Faces of America is about accomplished Americans' ancestral history. Throughout the show, the host reveals information about these famous character's ancestors and what they find really amazes the guests of the show. For example, famous chef Mario Batali finds out that his cooking instincts and talent comes from his Italian grandmother or Famous Asian-American figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi figures out that her grandfather fought against the Japanese in WWII.

The whole show is about the amazing things you can find out about your family and sometimes realize how your life would have been if your ancestors didn't make the decisions they made in life. One can realize how important and related our ancestors can be in our daily lives by watching this show. Where we are today has a huge relation to what our ancestors did in their past, that is why everyone must appreciate the sense of family and respect not only the ones that are alive but the ones that have passed away many years ago.

When: by 1900 Rockefeller donated about 80 million dollars to the university of Chicago
Why: he was advised to do so, plus he wanted to turn a small baptist college into a world class institution.
How: he created a general education board to fund schools in need so they took care of all philantrophic activities
